Why Hindi Reading Matters for Young Kids?
Many parents only practice reading English but reading practice in Hindi from childhood helps children:

Step-by-Step Guide to Teach Hindi Reading at Home
Step 1 โ Learn Swar (Hindi Vowels)
Start with the 14 Hindi vowels: เค , เค, เค, เค, เค, เค, เค, เค, เค, เค, เค เค, เค เค, เค, เค
These are the elements of all Hindi words. Make it fun with colorful flashcards, songs or picture books. Identify things around the home: "เคเคฎ" (mango), "เคเค" (fire) and link letters with actual objects.
Parents tip: 10 minutes of Swar every day. Repeat daily for 2 weeks then move on.
Step 2: Learn Vyanjan (Hindi Consonants)
When clear vowels are introduced, start introducing the 33 Hindi consonants: เค, เค, เค, เค... etc.
It is not possible to teach all 33 at once! Instruct 3-4 letters per week. Make use of picture-letter matching such as "เค for เคเคฎเคฒ" (lotus), "เค for เคเคพเคฏ" (cow).
Fun game: Have your child find 3 objects in the house that begin with the sound of your letter!
Step 3 โ Writing Practice (Lekhan Abhyas)
When children can identify the letters, it's time to write them. This is known as Lekhan Abhyas. Gently hold their hand and lead them first. Draw dotted lines or use practice worksheets.
Good writing practice is developed:
-
Fine motor skills (which will be important in school!)
-
Memory of letter shapes
-
Confidence to write Hindi words
Steps 4 โ Simple Words (Shabd Gyan)
Now combine vowels and consonants to form basic words, such as:
โข เคฎเคพเค (Maa โ mother)
โข เคเคฐ (Ghar โ home)
โข เคชเคพเคจเฅ (Paani โ water)
โข เคเคฎ (Aam โ mango)
Use picture-word cards. Display the picture and then assist the child to read the word that is written below.
Step 5 โ Begin Reading Sentences (Pathan Abhyas)
This is the most exciting step! Pathan Abhyas is the practice of reading. Once your child is familiar with letters and basic words, they can read short sentences.
Use sentences such as:
โข "เคฏเคน เคฎเฅเคฐเคพ เคเคฐ เคนเฅเฅค" (This is my home.)
โข "เคฎเคพเค เคเคพเคจเคพ เคฌเคจเคพ เคฐเคนเฅ เคนเฅเฅค" (Mom is cooking food.)
Read together every day. Point to each word as you say it. Allow your child to read slowly and have you listen!
What is Pathan Abhyas and Why is it So Important?
Pathan Abhyas (เคชเค เคจ เค เคญเฅเคฏเคพเคธ) simply means reading practice in Hindi. It is the last and most crucial step in learning to read Hindi.
When children do regular Pathan Abhyas, they:
โข Read Hindi sentences with ease and fluency
โข Understand what they are reading (comprehension)
โข Build speed and confidence in reading
โขDevelop a love for books and stories in Hindi language.
Mitali Hindi Literacy Series โ Book 5: Pathan Abhyas by Lil Legends is specially created for children 3-5 years. It introduces reading exercises, sentences formation and reading comprehension in a joyful and age appropriate manner. This book is part of a 5-book series and is designed to follow the earlier books, where children have learned the vowels, consonants, writing and simple words.
